May Day at The Kahala

The Kahala Hotel & Resort is deeply committed to preserving Oahu’s land, ocean and culture for generations to come through the Kahala Initiative for Sustainability, Culture and the Arts (KISCA). As part of that committment, we're celebrating May Day in our uniquely Hawaiian way.

In Hawaii, May Day is Lei Day. This one-day event on Saturday, May 1 will feature a lei making workshop and other cultural activities including hala weaving and coconut cracking in the lobby. Guests can also shop local brands at our pop-up shop in the lobby and visit our restaurants for live music and performances. Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture as you celebrate May Day at The Kahala with special events and celebrations fit for the whole family.

Hala Weaving Workshop

Hala weaving is a traditional practice to make items such as baskets, hats and mats from leaves of Hala trees. Watch Keoua Nelsen expertly weave together leaves during this special May Day workshop. Keoua Nelson hails from Kona and comes from a long line of lauhala weavers. 

Keoua’s mission is to continue to learn all that there is to learn regarding weaving lauhala and other natural fibers and considers himself lucky to have such great kumu as his Grandmother, Aunty Gladys, Aunty Gwen, Aunty Lorna and Pohaku Kahoʻohanohano. His work has been featured in the MAMo (Maoli Arts Movement) Wearable Arts fashion show, Nakeʻu Awai fashion shows, The Chicago Botanical Gardenʻs 1st Annual Orchid Show, the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, Japanese television Wafū Sohonke, Royal Hawaiian Center Pop Up Art Exhibition, PAʻI Culture and Arts Artist Guides and various magazine articles in Hawaiʻi, Japan and Taiwan.

From climbing, trimming, harvesting, farming and traveling to the outskirts of the Pacific, his dedication and passion for niu are evident in all he does.
