The Sound of One Hand: Zen Paintings and Calligraphy by Hakuin - This exhibition will be the first in the Western world solely devoted to the art of Hakuin Ekaku (1685-1768). Regarded as the most significant Japanese Zen master of the past 500 years, Hakuin is likewise seen as the most important Zen painter. The 95 paintings and works of calligraphy in The Sound of One Hand are drawn from private and public collections in the U.S. and Japan, including the Eisei Bunko Foundation in Tokyo. The exhibition presents an artistic biography of this artist and Zen master, and explores the themes and subjects Hakuin favored and the audiences whom he sought to address. Organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art and curated by the noted Zen painting scholars Stephen Addiss and Audrey Yoshiko Seo.
